Glossary

Photography clubs, like most hobbies, are prone to use a lot of acronyms, and WEBCC is no different. We hope that the glossary below will help you understand what some of the more commonly used acronyms stand for. They are listed in alphabetical order rather than being grouped by type. If we have forgotten to include any please let us know.

FIAP - Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique' , (The International Federation of Photographic Art), is an international organization of national associations of photography , PAGB being the UK national association.

FRPS - Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society: Awarded for a panel of 20images which must be of an outstanding photographic and creative standard and accompanied by a Statement of Intent. An obvious personal style is expected at this stage.

PAGB - Photographic Alliance of Great Britain is an organisation that co-ordinates specific activities for photographic clubs in England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland. It does this through 15 geographical regions known as Federations. The PAGB also offers awards: CPAGB - Credit; the DPAGB - Distinction; and MPAGB - Master.

PDI - Projected Digital Image: These are images prepared by club members for PDI club competitions where the images are projected for viewing rather than being printed.

RPS - Royal Photographic Society : The Royal Photographic Society exists to promote photography and image-making and to support photographers in realising their potential, irrespective of their level of knowledge, equipment or skills. It has an international membership. The Society also acts as a public advocate for photography and photographers. The RPS offer a range of Distinctions and Qualifications that members and non-members can apply for (see LRPS, ARPS, FRPS). Members and non-members can apply for a Distinction.

SCPF - Southern Counties Photographic Federation : One of the 15 local Federations within the PAGB and the one to which WEBCC belongs. Amongst other activities it runs inter-club Print and PDI Leagues, and rather like football the leagues are divided into divisions. At the end of each season the clubs coming top of their division are promoted, and those coming bottom are demoted.

TVDIG - Thames Valley Digital Imaging Group : A special interest group of the RPS which holds 8 full day Sunday events a year with a break in the summer. Meetings are held at Woosehill Community Hall. These are a mixture of tutorial, educational, practical and competition sessions, with some of the most experienced names in the world of digital photography, and cover a wide range of skill levels. It is possible to buy a season ticket (Jan-Dec) or one-off day tickets if space is available.
